We are proud to announce SGS partnership with Department of Agriculture and Livestock - Sharjah Government in the United Arab Emirates. The purpose of this partnership is to support and enhance sustainable agriculture in the UAE in the framework of the wheat farm in Maliha, Sharjah.
The wheat farm in the Maliha has been launched in 2023 by the Department of Agriculture and Livestock with the aim of ensuring food security in Sharjah. The project will be completed in three phases planned until 2025, the first phase of wheat cultivation covering an area of 400 hectares. This ambitious project’s objective is to promote sustainable farming practices in the UAE and help reduce dependency on imports.
Under this engagement, SGS UAE multi-disciplinary team has conducted multiple interventions and assessments as follows:
- We tested the wheat seeds in SGS state-of-the art laboratory in Dubai to validate that they are free from genetic modification, making sure that consumers would get non-GMO products.
- We verified compliance of the wheat flour and certified it under MoIAT (Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology of the UAE) National Product certification scheme. As a result, the Maliha wheat flour has been awarded the Emirates Quality Mark (EQM), the UAE national trust mark.
- We conducted inspections and audits to ensure that the wheat farm complies with UAE standards for organic certification under the MoIAT Organic Certification scheme. As a result, the wheat farm in Maliha has become the first organic wheat farm in the UAE.
- We audited the wheat farm’s FSMS (food safety management system) to verify its compliance with HACCP principles and the wheat farm has received the internationally recognized HACCP Codex Alimentarius General Principles of Food Hygiene certificate.
This joint initiative reiterates our commitment to supporting production of safe, high-quality food and to promoting sustainable farming practices in the UAE.
