The EU has revised the specifications for HBCDD under the POP Recast Regulation. The new law will become effective on October 17, 2024.
In 2023, the EU consulted over its draft regulation to amend the requirements for hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) under Part A to Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 on persistent organic pollutants (POP Recast Regulation, SafeGuardS 160/23)
On September 27, 2024, the EU issued Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/2555 of March 21, 2024, to revise the POP Recast Regulation regarding HBCDD.

Specific exemption on intermediate use or other specifications as unintentional trace contaminant (UTC) | ≤ 75 mg/kg in substances, mixtures, articles or as constituents of the flame-retarded articles ≤ 100 mg/kg for recycled polystyrene in the manufacture of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation materials for use in buildings or civil engineering works (the above values will be reviewed and assessed by January 1, 2026) | ≤ 100 mg/kg in substances, mixtures, articles or as constituents of the flame-retarded articles | |
