FSSC 22000 Version 6: How is Food Safety System Certification changing?

Food Safety System Certification (FSSC) 22000 has always been a valuable scheme for companies looking to maintain the highest level of food safety management – and build consumer trust and confidence. Version 6 (V6) of the internationally recognized scheme has been officially published. This new version includes a significant number of changes designed to improve the scheme’s effectiveness.

These changes will have a major impact on organizations in the food chain, so it's important to make sure you're up to date on what they are and how they will affect your business.

Why was FSSC 22000 updated?

The changes are designed to:

  • Integrate ISO 22003-1:2022 (requirements for bodies providing food safety management system audits and certification)
  • Strengthen the requirements in areas that will help organizations meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Incorporate V6 development survey feedback

What are the key changes?

The most notable updates are:

  • Realignment of Food Chain Categories, in accordance with ISO 22003-1:2022
  • Expanded scope to include Trading and Brokering (FII)
  • Removal of Farming and FSSC 22000-Quality
  • Integration of food safety and quality culture requirements
  • New quality control, food loss and waste, and equipment management requirements
  • Strengthened existing additional requirements in Part 2, such as allergen management and environmental monitoring
  • Changes to and clarification of certification process requirements
  • A new QR code on certificates for improved traceability

What is the transition timeline?

V6 has a 12-month transition window to allow organizations to prepare for the new version, and to allow CBs to implement and gain accreditation.

The first V6 audits will commence from April 1, 2024, and all participating organizations must complete the V6 upgrade audit before March 31, 2025.
