SGS is celebrating Australian National Safe Work Month in October. Join us in making employee well-being a priority.
October is Australian National Safe Work Month, an initiative of Safe Work Australia to raise awareness of the importance of providing a safe and healthy work environment for all Australians.
This year’s themes are:
- Injuries at work
- Mental health
- Managing work health and safety (WHS) risks and preventing harm
- Safe and healthy workplace for all
According to Safe Work Australia, around 194 people died while doing their job in 2021, and 120,355 people made a workers’ compensation claim for serious injury or illness in 2019-20. Preventing health and safety risks will help companies to better meet employee expectations and regulatory requirements.
Taking a proactive approach to workplace safety
Occupational health and safety (OH&S) is essential to business success – your people are your most valuable asset, and you are legally obligated to protect them.
Therefore, when it comes to health and safety, it is essential to take a proactive approach. With the work environment constantly changing, we must not only be vigilant at all times but also intervene whenever our colleagues are in danger of harm from risky behavior that could create a hazardous situation. Intervention by peers is essential for ensuring everyone is safe at work.
This proactive approach to workplace safety offers multiple benefits:
Firstly, it creates an environment in which risk is identified and resolved before it becomes an accident. This will reduce worker injuries and increase OH&S policy awareness and site productivity.
Secondly, it provides a framework through which an organization can coordinate all aspects of its occupational health and safety policy. This framework can be enhanced by the adoption of an OH&S management system, such as ISO 45001.
Finally, the use of a contractor safety program to provide expert advice and recommendations can contribute significantly to a long term, enhanced OH&S culture.
What is ISO 45001?
ISO 45001 is a globally recognized occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) standard. It outlines key requirements and aims to improve overall health and safety performance, encouraging internal and external stakeholder focus as part of adopting a risk-based approach.
What are the benefits of being ISO 45001 certified?
The ISO 45001 standard promotes a safe and healthy working environment to:
- Reduce risk and prevent injuries
- Improve health and safety performance facilitating continual improvements
- Protect your workforce and others
- Comply with legal requirements
The standard is intended for any organization, regardless of its size or the nature of its work, and aligns with other management system standards, such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
