SGS Expands Lithium Analysis Services in Kalgoorlie, Australia with Fusion ICP-MS and ICP-OES

September 12, 2023

We are proud to announce the expansion of services at our Kalgoorlie laboratory to include the first Kalgoorlie based lithium analysis hub, with technology that includes fusion inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy ICP-OES).

This strategic move reaffirms our commitment to providing state-of-the-art solutions to the mining and resources industry in Australia. Lithium producers will now be able to have their samples analysed locally, decreasing turnaround times, while reducing costs and transport and carbon emissions.

Laboratory manager for the Kalgoorlie lab, Herman Klem explains that SGS prioritises investment in solutions that support cleaner energy transitions and infrastructure.
We anticipate sustained growth in the critical minerals sector as the demand for energy alternatives accelerate. Exploration and processing companies will amplify their engagement with critical minerals, and consequently, these industries will play a pivotal role in facilitating the shift towards sustainable energy sources.

How do businesses benefit from the expansion?

Lithium, a critical component in the sustainable energy transition, is experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand. As a pivotal metal in powering the future, accurate and reliable analysis of lithium is imperative for mining operations, exploration endeavours and production processes. Our Kalgoorlie laboratory’s enhanced scope of work addresses this demand by integrating innovative Fusion ICP-MS and ICP-OES technologies into its repertoire of analytical techniques. This allows us to offer unparalleled accuracy and precision, ensuring that clients receive trustworthy data for informed decision making.

The expanded capabilities of our laboratory in Kalgoorlie encompass comprehensive lithium analysis, covering a wide range of sample types, including ores, concentrates and minerals.

Herman states,We are excited to announce the expansion of our scope of works to include advanced lithium analysis with fusion ICP-MS and ICP-OES technologies. We are dedicated to equipping our clients with accurate and timely analytical solutions that contribute to the success of their mining operations.

Fusion ICP-MS combines sample fusion, a powerful technique for complete sample dissolution, with ICP-MS for ultra-trace elemental analysis. This approach enhances the laboratory's ability to detect and quantify low levels of lithium and other critical elements, delivering results with exceptional sensitivity. This technology can analyse a wide array of elements simultaneously, providing quick and reliable results. Its high-throughput capability is instrumental in streamlining analytical processes for lithium and other elemental determinations.
