This World Food Safety Day we are reminded that preparedness is key when it comes to preventing food safety incidents.
Did you know that 1 in 10 people worldwide fall ill from contaminated food each year, and 40 percent of the foodborne disease burden is carried by children under five?
As the global food supply becomes increasingly interconnected, it is crucial that we all contribute to promoting health, ensuring safety and protecting the vulnerable.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) established World Food Safety Day in 2018 to encourage global collaboration to prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks.
The sixth annual World Food Safety Day will take place on the June 7, 2024, with the theme of “Food safety: prepare for the unexpected”. This year’s event aims to highlight the importance of preparing for unexpected food safety incidents, no matter how mild or severe they may be.
Food incidents can arise due to accidents, power outages, inadequate controls, food fraud and natural disasters. They can have a severe impact on health, livelihoods and businesses. However, with proper planning and preparation, and by acting together, we can minimize the impact of these incidents.
Are you ready for the unexpected?
Food safety is a collective responsibility, and everyone, from governments to food suppliers to consumers, must do their part. However, even when we have done everything we can, unforeseen events can still compromise food safety. In such cases, preparedness is key.
What steps can food operators take to prepare for the unexpected?
- Establish and regularly update food safety management plans. All food producers, importers, manufacturers, distributors and retailers should have such plans in place
- Follow good hygiene practices to prevent food safety incidents
- Provide regular staff training to ensure that all staff members are aware of the latest food safety protocols and best practices
