Australian Wood Packaging Certification Scheme (AWPCS)

Protect plant health and minimize pathways for introducing and spreading pests and diseases when trading wood products.

Trading wood products internationally carries the risk of introducing harmful pests and diseases to new environments. Ensuring that exported wood packaging is treated and certified according to international standards is crucial to protect plant health and maintain smooth trade flows.

The Australian Wood Packaging Certification Scheme (AWPCS) helps Australian treatment providers and wood packaging manufacturers meet the globally recognized International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 (ISPM 15). This standard regulates wood packaging in trade to prevent pest and disease spread while supporting efficient international trade.

As an accredited certification body for AWPCS, we offer tailored solutions to help you meet the requirements, achieve certification and apply the ISPM 15 mark to your wood packaging products.

FAQ section

Applications for certification under the AWPCS must be made to an accredited certification body (like SGS). To meet IPSM 15 requirements, wood packaging materials must be made of debarked wood and undergo either:

  • Heat treatment (using a conventional steam or dry kiln heat chamber)
  • Dielectric heating
  • Fumigation (using either methyl bromide or sulfuryl fluoride)

To verify that treatment has occurred and to provide traceability to the country of origin, an internationally recognized ISPM 15 certification mark will be applied to the treated wood packaging.
