Health Canada has added portable electric heaters to Table 3 of the General Prohibitions process. This does not constitute a ban on all portable electric heaters.
On November 28, 2024, Health Canada determined that portable electric heaters must meet key performance criteria outlined in the danger to human health or safety assessment process to be manufactured, imported, advertised or sold in Canada. As a result, portable electric heaters have been added to Table 3 of the General Prohibitions process. This does not constitute a ban on all portable electric heaters, as only those that do not meet critical safety criteria would be considered dangerous and cannot be manufactured, imported, advertised or sold in Canada.
Portable heaters that comply with one of the following standards are deemed to meet critical safety criteria:
- CSA C22.2 NO. 46-13 (R2018) – Standard for electric air-heaters
- CAN/CSA E60335-2-30:13 (R2018) – Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-30: Particular requirements for room heaters
Portable electric heaters can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard.
