Installing Solar Panels Requires Measurements

14. Jun 2023

When you have a solar power system installed on your roof, law requires the electrical contractor to make certain measurements.

To keep the quality of installations at an acceptable level regardless of the installer, an installation standard is used as an aid. The standard sets requirements for the commissioning inspection. According to the regulations, certain installation measurements, such as voltages and resistances, must be performed in connection with the installation.

During commissioning, the installing contractor defines an inspection interval for the equipment, which is based on, for example, to the type, usage and operation of equipment, as well as the effects of external factors affecting the equipment. In connection with periodic inspections, also maintenance measurements are performed on the system. The results of measurements must be reported in accordance with the requirements.

What kind of equipment does the installer use?

The measuring device used by the installer doesn’t necessarily report correct results. The operating conditions of the meters may be harsh, the device may receive hits or bumps that damage it. With age, even a well-maintained device can fail.

Incorrect measurement results can endanger the safety of the resident. A responsible installer ensures with calibration that his devices work within the accepted accuracy values and produce reliable and high-quality results.

Calibration is a procedure that ensures the correctness and reliability of the measurement results given by the measuring device or measurement system. As a result of the calibration, It is therefore possible to find out if the value displayed by the meter differs from the correct value. Accredited calibration of measuring and monitoring equipment means that the measurement results are verified and traceable.

Remember to make sure that the installer who installs your solar panel system has properly calibrated measuring devices.
