May 16, 2024

We're thrilled to introduce you to Sharon Coulson, the Technical Microbiology Manager at SGS in Cramlington. Sharon's journey is not just a testament to her dedication and hard work but also reflects the spirit of empowerment and growth that we cherish here at SGS.

Sharon's path to her current role was anything but conventional. Leaving school with 2 A-levels and a thirst for knowledge, she stumbled upon an opportunity that would shape her career trajectory forever. Joining a laboratory while pursuing scientific qualifications marked the beginning of her remarkable journey.

"I started working for a renowned frozen food company on the August 8, 1988, a memorable day for me!" Sharon fondly recalls. Despite facing redundancy in 2008, she quickly found her footing in a small start-up lab, where her skills propelled her from supervisor to lab manager. This journey continued through acquisitions and corporate transitions until the lab merged with another company, eventually becoming part of the SGS group.

Today, Sharon leads a dynamic team at our Cramlington site, where their commitment to excellence and customer focus shines through every project. "The key is teamwork," Sharon emphasizes, highlighting the camaraderie and enthusiasm that drive their success. Their dedication extends beyond the confines of the lab as they actively engage with clients, welcoming them to witness firsthand the meticulous processes that ensure top quality results.

But it's not just about the routine work; Sharon and her team actively strive to make science exciting, fostering relationships with local colleges to inspire the next generation of scientists. "I love working with people, passing on my skills, and seeing others develop," she shares, encapsulating her passion for mentorship and nurturing talent.

In the face of challenges, particularly during the pandemic, Sharon and her team stood as essential workers, ensuring the safety and quality of our food supply. Their diligence in testing has not only prevented potential outbreaks but also safeguarded client reputations—a testament to the vital role they play in public health.

Looking to the future, Sharon is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. With recent expansions and a growing client base, they are poised for even greater success. "No day is the same," Sharon remarks, reflecting on the ever-evolving nature of their work—a sentiment that encapsulates the excitement and dynamism of a career in science.

In closing, Sharon extends an invitation to anyone interested in science to consider a career in laboratory testing—a world where innovation meets practicality, and every day brings new challenges and discoveries. "I have definitely enjoyed my career," she concludes, leaving no doubt that her journey is far from over, and the best is yet to come.
