Japan has launched a consultation on its draft ministerial ordinance to designate 138 PFOA-related compounds as Class I Specified Chemical Substances. The ordinance is expected to become effective on January 10, 2025.

In July 2024, Japan issued Cabinet Order No. 244 to revise the nation’s Order of the Act on the Examination of Chemical Substances and Regulation of Their Manufacturing, etc. (Cabinet Order No. 202 of 1974) by designating perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) isomers or its salts and PFOA-related compounds as Class I Specified Chemical Substances (SafeGuardS 113/24).

Among the provisions in Cabinet Order No. 244, it allocated powers to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) and other competent authorities to specify the list of PFOA-related compounds.

On September 9, 2024, Japan’s MHLW and other competent authorities launched a one-month consultation period over designating 138 PFOA-related compounds as Class I Specified Chemical Substances.

According to the announcement, comments will be accepted until October 9, 2024
