Meat and Fish Speciation Testing by Next Generation Sequencing: Next Assurance Level for Food Safety

October 16, 2024

Our latest addition of Speciation by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methods further enhances the food safety and traceability of your products, allowing the identification of all species present in a food sample*. This innovative solution significantly contributes to the fight against food fraud and ensure the authenticity of food products.

What is in your food sample?

Our NGS DNA diagnostics can accurately identify the biological content of a food sample, whether it is processed or unprocessed. The test is applicable to all food and pet food that may contain one or many species and can be used for raw or processed foods including canned products. The categories currently being tested include meat, poultry and fish.

Expanding database and future inclusions

The NGS database, which currently includes more than 12,000 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes, is continually expanding. Soon, we will be able to also include plants, notably herbs and spices, as well as seafood like bivalves, cephalopods, and crustaceans to this service.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of this cutting-edge testing method include:

  • Powerful solution with virtually unlimited results
  • Fast turnaround time
  • Competitive pricing
  • Highly sensitive analyses
  • Full biological breakdown

By employing NGS analysis, you can effectively and economically identify substitution and contamination in your products.

This ground-breaking testing method is instrumental in protecting operations, customers, and consumers. It provides a robust solution that not only ensures the integrity of food products but also safeguards the reputation of your business.

How is NGS different to other testing options?

NGS analysis acts as an advanced screening tool: where conventional market testing methods are limited to checking samples against a predefined list of meats/fishes, untargeted NGS analysis can swiftly and accurately identify all the types of meat/fish contained within a product* whether they are expected or not, providing the most comprehensive and precise recipe assessment.

*if present in our databases, which includes more than 12,000 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes

Why choose SGS?
