IMSBC Code Testing

Trade bulk cargo with confidence.

Comprehensive sampling and testing solutions in line with IMSBC requirements.

Cargo Ship Entering the River of Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam

Operators are required to provide appropriate information regarding condition when shipping bulk cargoes. Commodities prone to liquefaction must be categorized as group A or A/B cargoes, with actual moisture content being lower than the cargo’s transportable moisture limit (TML) at the time of loading. The International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) code regulations contain methodologies for determining the relationship between actual moisture and TML.

Our solutions

We offer the full range of sampling and testing solutions in line with IMSBC requirements. Our global network of experts utilizes various methodologies, including:

  • Flow table test procedure
  • Penetration test procedure
  • Proctor/Fagerberg test procedure, including commodity specific modified versions

We will also determine the angle of repose for non-cohesive dry bulk (for trimming purposes) and ascertain if a cargo has self-heating properties (in line with the United Nations Manual of Tests and Criteria, part III, 33.3.1.6).

Why choose SGS?

SGS is recognized as the benchmark for quality and integrity when trading bulk cargoes. With an unrivalled network of inspectors and state-of-the-art testing facilities, we supply the ship’s master with the necessary documentation to successfully complete the transportation of a wide variety of commodities to global markets.
