The carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) is an environmental tax measure aimed at reducing the risk of carbon leakage and fulfilling the EU's ambitions in climate mitigation. It is based on a system of certificates covering the embedded emissions in imported products, so importers must pay the same carbon price as domestic producers under the EU emission trade system (ETS).
The transitional phase for reporting started on 1 October 2023 and will run until the end of 2025. The final regime will start gradually from 2026. The regulation requires quantification of embedded emissions in CBAM goods in the EU’s own methodology.
This workshop provides a hands-on demonstration for product compliance and sustainability professionals to understand and practice emission quantification for CBAM reporting in the transition period.
Objective:
- To understand and operate the EU CBAM-specific methodology for the transition phase
- To understand the monitoring and verification for a smooth transition to the definitive phase
- To be able to explain the rules and roles under CBAM to identify the relevant obligation
- To build a foundational understanding for navigating the future regulatory landscape on product sustainability
