Safety is of the utmost importance with electronic devices. One of the standardizing bodies that regulate safety in the electrical engineering world is the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which specifically establishes international criteria for all electrical and electronic technology.
Background:
IEC 62368-1 applies to the safety of electrical and electronic equipment within the field of audio, video, information, and communication technology with a rated voltage not exceeding 600 V. With its implementation, it introduces a new, hazard-based perspective to product testing for ICT (Information and Communications Technology) and AV (Audio/Video) equipment, which supersedes the outgoing IEC 60950-1 for ICT equipment and IEC 60065 for AV equipment, the new single standard is implementing fundamentally different engineering principles and terminologies.
IEC 62368-1 Overview of Standard
Today, either the IEC 62368-1 (Edition 2.0/3.0) standard or the IEC 60950-1/IEC 60065 standard can be accepted for the application of Safety Type approval in most Asia-Pacific countries and regions.
However, some Asia-Pacific countries and regions have not officially published or applied their national standards corresponding to IEC 62368-1, and only the IEC 60950-1 / IEC 60065 standard can be accepted for the application of Safety Type Approval.
Besides, the application of the IEC 62368-1 standard is also expanding to RF type approvals. The test report under either the IEC 62368-1 (Edition 2.0/3.0) standard or IEC 60950-1/IEC 60065 standard can be accepted for the application of RF approval in most Asia-Pacific countries and regions.
- The local deviation test must be considered if the IEC 62368-1 and/or IEC 60950-1/IEC 60065 standards are acceptable
- The naming of 62368-1, 60950-1, and 60065 standards varies from country to country. Collectively referred to as IEC 62368-1, IEC 60950-1, and IEC 60065 in the table title of this article
