Motor manufacturers need to produce vehicles that are safe for drivers and passengers, as well as being aesthetically pleasing and built to last. Numerous standards and regulations exist to help manufacturers achieve these goals. SGS automotive testing services include durability tests, as well as tests for cleanliness, filtration and fire safety.
Here are details of just some of our capabilities in appearance testing, thermal analysis, fire testing and fluid system component cleanliness testing.
Appearance Testing
We have a multitude of equipment and test methods for assessing the ability of parts and materials to resist visible damage from:
- Abrasion
- Rubbing
- Washing
- Impact
- Chipping
- Falling sand abrasion
- Shot blasting and gritting
- Staining
- Soaking or spraying with fluids including volatiles, fuels and oils
Please contact us for a full list of International and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards we test against.
Thermal Analysis
We also help manufacturers test and benchmark materials for their thermal and physical properties. These tests include:
- Fourier Transform InfraRed spectroscopy
- Differential Scanning Calorimetry
- Thermogravimetric Analysis
- Melt Fluidity Index
- Dynamic Mechanical Analysis
- Thermo Mechanical Analysis
- Density
- Ash content
- Vicat Softening Temperature Point and deflection under load
- Air permeability

Fire Testing
To be compliant with safety regulations, manufacturers must check the flammability of materials according to FMVSS 302 or EEC 118 as well as their own specifications. The horizontal combustibility test determines the combustion speed of materials. In addition to this test, SGS can perform vertical combustibility tests.

Filtration Performance
We provide advanced determination of fuel, oil, and air filters for internal combustion and electric vehicles, including:
- Particulate removal and micron ratings
- Water emulsion removal from fuels
- Cabin air particulate and odor removal
- Dust and water capacities
- Paint shop filtration including HVAC and Paint Wetting Impairment Substance (PWIS) detection

Cleanliness of Components
The cleanliness of automotive fluid components is essential if the system is to be reliable and durable. We offer cleanliness tests to ensure component parts for air circuits, coolants, fuel and oil are safe and comply with all necessary standards. The tests involve extraction by shaking or rinsing, after which impurities are filtered out and analyzed to determine the particle count, size and nature.
