With the increased reliance on electrical and electronic (E/E) systems in automobiles, independently verifying that these components meet the industry’s safety requirements is vital to reducing costly recalls and preventing consumer injuries.
ISO 26262 was adapted for the automotive industry from IEC 61508 functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems. It applies to each stage of the product’s life cycle, including the specifications for design, as well as the implementation, integration, verification, validation, product release and decommissioning stages.
The global standard provides a risk-based approach specific to the automotive sector, the automotive safety integrity level (ASIL). The ASIL is determined through a risk analysis of the safety hazard through the severity, exposure and controllability of the potential incident.
ISO 26262 comprises 12 parts, covering various aspects:
- ISO 26262-1 – vocabulary
- ISO 26262-2 – management of functional safety
- ISO 26262-3 – concept phase
- ISO 26262-4 – product development at the system level
- ISO 26262-5 – product development at the hardware level
- ISO 26262-6 – product development at the software level
- ISO 26262-7 – production, operation, service and decommissioning
- ISO 26262-8 – supporting processes
- ISO 26262-9 – ASIL- and safety-oriented analyses
- ISO 26262-10 – guidelines on ISO 26262
- ISO 26262-11 – guidelines on the application of ISO 26262 to semiconductors
- ISO 26262-12 – adaptation of ISO 26262 for motorcycles
What are the benefits of ISO 26262 certification?
ISO 26262 certification follows successful completion of an audit and enables you to:
- Confirm there is a process in place to ensure that risk and hazard analyses have been considered throughout the component’s life cycle
- Independently verify your ISO 26262 compliance as a contract prerequisite, which is particularly important for tier 1 suppliers and OEMs
- Reduce safety-related recalls and increase consumer confidence
Aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
ISO 26262 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 9.
Why SGS?
As one of the world’s largest certification companies, with decades of experience in the automotive industry, we understand the industry’s challenges and the complexity of today’s vehicles.
We can help you along the path to certification with an ISO 26262 audit. Your audit can include a gap assessment and benchmarking. We will determine your level of competence and provide advice on how to achieve ongoing improvement.
SGS Academy also offers ISO 26262-specific training or combined with ISO/PAS 19451 semiconductor components.
