Is PPD dangerous?

But what exactly is PPD, and is it safe for use? Despite its effectiveness in coloring hair, PPD carries a notorious reputation for its potential adverse effects on health. Primarily, PPD has been linked to a spectrum of reactions, ranging from mild skin irritation to more severe allergic contact dermatitis. Individuals with heightened sensitivity may even experience dermatitis, characterized by skin inflammation and irritation, commonly known as eczema. Symptoms often manifest shortly after application, with telltale signs appearing on areas such as the upper eyelids or rims of the ears. While these symptoms typically subside once the dye oxidizes, the discomfort caused by rashes and swelling can be distressing, especially for those with sensitive skin.

In addition to users experiencing skin irritations from having their hair colored with permanent color containing PPD, Hair colorists, in particular, often develop dermatitis on their hands, which may spread to other areas of the body with continued exposure.

Why does it matter?

The prevalence of PPDs extends beyond boxed hair dyes to include other cosmetic products, such as black henna, commonly used in various Muslim countries. Black henna, favored for its ability to impart a darker tint to hair with ease, contains PPDs that can trigger allergic reactions upon exposure. Once sensitized, further contact with PPDs, such as through black henna tattoos, can have fatal consequences, underscoring the gravity of the issue.

How can we help?

Addressing these risks requires a concerted effort to prioritize consumer safety. While the use of black henna has been banned in certain regions, PPDs continue to feature prominently in a wide array of hair dye products. Therefore, consumers must opt for brands that undergo testing and certification processes to ensure product safety.
