On the occasion of COP16 on Biodiversity, taking place in Colombia, SGS is proud to endorse the Business for Nature statement.
This statement reflects the growing recognition among global companies that a healthy planet is the foundation of a resilient business. It also emphasizes the crucial role of governmental leadership in strengthening legal frameworks, enabling businesses to contribute meaningfully to halting nature loss by 2030.
SGS recognizes the urgency of taking action now. As a leader in testing, inspection and certification, we provide a comprehensive range of services to support clients on their journey toward a nature-positive future. Our expertise helps companies assess, monitor, disclose, and reduce their biodiversity impacts, while optimizing environmental risk management.
The Sixteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16) will be held in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024. It marks the first Biodiversity COP since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) by 193 countries in December 2022. This historic framework, aligned with the SDGs, envisions a “world living in harmony with nature” by 2050. It includes four long-term global goals and 23 specific targets, with the overarching mission of halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030.
COP16 will focus on implementing the GBF and finalizing discussions on sharing the benefits from Digital Sequence Information on plant and animal genetic resources. A critical point on the agenda is the role of governments in setting national biodiversity targets and updating their national biodiversity strategies and action plans.
SGS supports these vital steps for defining legislation and actions needed to achieve the GBF's 2030 goals.
Géraldine Picaud, CEO of SGS, commented:
At SGS, we believe that safeguarding biodiversity is not just an environmental priority, but a business imperative. By aligning with global frameworks and offering our expertise, we are committed to supporting our clients in driving meaningful change toward a nature-positive future.
