Celebrating Our Success in the Pan Pac Rebuild

August 07, 2024

We are pleased to announce that Greg Chapman and his team have been honoured for their exceptional work on the Pan Pac rebuild project. This recognition underscores the team’s hard work and strong teamwork.

Project Phoenix

Pan Pac is the largest forestry grower in New Zealand’s Hawkes Bay Region. In February 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle caused extensive flood damage at the Pan Pac site near Napier, necessitating a complete overhaul of the electrical infrastructure. The recovery project, named Project Phoenix, aimed to restore boilers, a chip mill, a lumber mill, and a pulp mill.

The project had two primary goals: first, to restore production and ensure compliance with specific standards, including upgrading to the AS/NZ4024 machinery safety standard, and second, to enhance capacity by installing a new finishing line in the pulp mill. These were achieved though meticulous planning and execution and ultimately improved overall operational efficiency and safety.

Inspiring initiative

Greg’s team played a crucial role in the project’s success. Team members were responsible for designing machinery safety compliant controls, automating new switchboards and refurbishing pulp dryer burners. Up to 14 engineers worked diligently on programming using Rockwell ControlLogix and Emerson Delta V systems, showcasing their technical expertise and collaborative effort.

Spanning 16 months, Project Phoenix achieved several significant milestones, including the initial startup of the chip mill and installation of the first pulp dryer and finishing line. Despite various challenges, the team effectively managed multiple work fronts, demonstrating its members’ ability to coordinate and execute complex tasks under pressure.

Safety was a top priority throughout the project. The team maintained an impeccable safety record by implementing daily toolbox talks, a permit-to-work system and thorough hazard assessments. Challenges such as dust, mud and electrical hazards were managed successfully, ensuring a safe working environment for all involved.

Recognition for hard work

In recognition of its exceptional dedication to the successful restoration of the plant, the team received an award from Pan Pac, made from the first lumber produced by the refurbished mill’

The project was a testament to the team's spirit and dedication. Its coordinated efforts and commitment to safety and excellence enabled the team to overcome obstacles and achieve its goals.
