We are proud to support decarbonisation in New Zealand by becoming a Meridian Certified Renewable Energy customer.
Climate change stands as one of the most significant challenges of our time and, while we are not a carbon-intensive company, we are committed to significantly reducing our emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2050.
As we enter the new year, we are excited to announce these commitments will be supported by purchasing Meridian’s Certified Renewable Energy in New Zealand.
Transitioning to greener energy production, innovating our operations, and supporting the communities we operate in are fundamental to achieving these decarbonisation goals and our wider Sustainability Ambitions 2030 Strategy.
Purchasing Certified Renewable Energy matched to our electricity consumption is just one of many initiatives we are adopting in New Zealand to achieve our sustainability goals. If you want to learn more, you can read our previous sustainability article where we announced that half of our fleet in New Zealand is now low carbon hybrid vehicles.
Johan O’Connell, SGS AUNZ Managing Director said “I’m excited for us to be part of Meridian’s innovative Certified Renewable Energy program. This serves as a clear demonstration of our commitment to investing in best practice solutions to achieve our sustainability targets, while supporting the communities we operate in.”
What is Certified Renewable Energy?
Certified Renewable Energy is independently verified by BraveTrace, to ensure that every megawatt-hour of electricity we consume is matched by the same amount of 100% renewable electricity added to the national grid from Meridian’s hydro stations or wind farms.
Meridian’s Certified Renewable Energy product enables us to report our market-based Scope 2 electricity emissions in New Zealand as zero (using the market-based reporting methodology as per the GHG Protocol’s Scope 2 Guidance).
By signing up to Certified, we’re showing our support for renewable energy generation, as well as contributing to Meridian’s Community Decarbonisation Fund that funds grassroots decarbonisation projects across Aotearoa. Meridian’s Certified Renewable Energy product therefore allows us to purchase renewable energy certificates to verify that the amount of electricity we use from the grid is matched on an annual basis with electricity produced from 100% renewable sources.
By embracing this initiative, we are not just reducing our carbon footprint but setting a benchmark in sustainability for the Testing, Inspection and Certification industry in New Zealand.
What is the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance
The GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance is an internationally recognised standard developed by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol to help organisations measure, manage, and report Scope 2 emissions—the indirect greenhouse gas emissions generated from the electricity, steam, heating, or cooling purchased and consumed by an organisation.
