Stack Emission Monitoring

Measure emission levels from stacks and ducts with stack emission monitoring.

Pollutants emitted into the atmosphere from stacks and ducts may include particulate matter, gases, fumes and vapors. The type and amount of pollutants must be quantified to:

  • Evaluate compliance with existing or proposed emission regulations
  • Quantify the financial losses associated with product losses
  • Obtain engineering data to specify the design of control equipment
  • Test the efficiency of installed control equipment
  • Provide emission data required for modelling purposes
  • Calibrate continuous monitors

Evaluation requires representative and accurate emission data. Emission measurements and sampling are therefore performed in terms of specific and validated test methods. Test methods can be industry specific and originate from various sources, including:

  • United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA)
  • International Standards Organization (ISO)
  • British Standards (BS)
  • European Union (EU)
  • Other local regulators

Stack Emission Monitoring Services From SGS

We offer accredited emission testing and analytical services around the globe. Our experienced professionals can cover all sizes of project, using the latest instrumentation, including sophisticated isokinetic samplers and state-of-the-art flue gas analyzers, to monitor all regulated pollutants, including criteria pollutants and volatile organic compounds. These include:

  • Particulate matter (including PM-10 and PM-2.5 fractions)
  • Acid gases
  • Metals (including mercury)
  • Dioxins/furans, PCBs and PAHs
  • Volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds
  • Total and speciated hydrocarbons
  • SO2, NOX, CO, CO2, O2

Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS)

We also have extensive experience of performing calibration services on CEMS, which collect real-time data for various parameters (O2, CO2, CO, NOX, SO2 and THC). These must comply with the latest regulations (e.g. US EPA and EU), such as:

  • Relative Accuracy Test Audits (40CFR 60 and 75)
  • Quarterly and annual QA/QC audits
  • QAL 1: Choice of the qualified equipment (Automated Measuring System) and the measuring procedure
  • QAL 2: Quality assurance of the installation and calibration, including validation
  • QAL 3: Ongoing quality assurance of the AMS
  • AST: Annual quality assurance by control measurements

Why choose SGS?

Our global network of sampling teams and laboratories, accredited at local and international levels, provide quality results, giving you greater control over your sampling. In addition, our operations in Belgium (Institute for Applied Chromatography) and North America are recognized as some of the world’s leading laboratories for dioxin and furan testing. With SGS you can be confident your production processes will be thoroughly examined to control and reduce the release of these substances.
