Minnesota, USA, Intends Ban on Toxic Chemicals in Packaging

The US state of Minnesota has introduced a proposed law to regulate certain chemicals in packaging. If this act is approved, the ban will become effective in January 2028.

In February 2025, Minnesota introduced SF 1380 (companion HF 1486) to prohibit 18 chemicals/classes of chemicals in packaging.

According to the definitions in Minnesota Statutes Section 105A.03, ‘packaging’ means a container and any related material that provides a means for transporting, marketing, protecting or handling a product. The term includes pallets and packaging materials, such as blocking, bracing, cushioning, weatherproofing, strapping, coatings, closures, inks, dyes, pigments and labels.
