CEC are a constantly evolving category of chemicals. Previously unknown or unrecognized as harmful to the environment or human health, these chemicals are increasingly coming under scrutiny by regulatory authorities. They generally have few “point sources” of release or exposure and are often widely used in consumer goods.
Due to their wide application, these substances present a significant threat to both animals and aquatic species. Many compounds are Persistent Bioaccumulative Toxins (PBTs), while others are associated with endocrine disruption, including estrogenic effects in humans or animals. Often these contaminants have yet to be regulated as there are significant gaps in understanding of their toxicity, bioaccumulation, occurrence, transport, and transformation. Advances in the specificity and sensitivity of analytical methods means researchers and regulators are now able to identify potential CECs.
SGS CEC Testing Services
We work alongside the environmental science community to develop test methods that cover the next generation of contaminants yet to be regulated. Our innovation has allowed us to develop rigorous, industry applicable analytical methods to define and quantify CECs. For example, we developed a comprehensive method for detecting pharmaceutical and personal care product contaminants (USEPA 1694) that is capable of measuring over 200 organic compounds of concern in all common matrices.
Our testing methods can detect most CECs in the nanogram to picogram range, measured by GC HRMS and LCMS/MS instrumentation and we benchmark our analytical performance by participation in performance evaluation tests and leading scientific/technical world forums, subjecting our science to peer review.
SGS CEC analyses include:
- Perfluoalkyl Substances (PFAS), including PFOS, PFOA, Perfluorinated Sulfonamides and Telomer Alcohols – USEPA 537 with isotope dilution
- Organochlorine/Organophosphate Flame Retardants including Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) – SGS developed USEPA 1614
- Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCP) – SGS developed USEPA 1694
- Bisphenol A and metabolites
- Triclosan
- Mono Phthalate Esters and metabolites
- Nonyl Phenols and Nonyl Phenol Ethoxylates
- Steroids and hormones – SGS developed USEPA 1698
