Enhanced NDT Capabilities with Eddy Current Technique (ECT) Training Level III in Pakistan

July 20, 2023

We are delighted to announce that SGS Pakistan team member Zahir Khan has successfully attained certification as ECT Level III from ASNT Certification Services LLC.

About ECT

Eddy current testing is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique thoroughly used in various industries such as aerospace, automotive, power generation and petrochemical for inspecting conductive materials.

The technique is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction and is particularly effective for detecting surface and near-surface defects.

Here below are listed some applications of the ECT:

  • Measurement of coating thickness on painted surfaces.
  • Inspection of steam turbine generator components like rotors, stators, and retaining rings for cracks, fatigue, and material degradation.
  • Assessment of heat exchangers, boilers, and condenser tubes for corrosion, erosion, and tube wall thinning.
  • Evaluation of welds in pipelines and pressure vessels.
  • Inspection of pipes, tubes, and tanks for corrosion, erosion, and wall thickness measurements.
  • Detection of stress corrosion cracking in welds and metal structures.
  • Inspection of aircraft components such as turbine blades, engine parts, and landing gear for cracks, corrosion, and material defects.
  • Monitoring the structural integrity of aircraft fuselage and wings.
  • Quality control of automotive components like engine blocks, crankshafts, gears, and suspension parts for cracks, voids, and material defects.

Benefits of Eddy current testing include:

  • Non-destructive nature: Eddy current testing allows for the inspection of materials and components without causing damage or requiring sample preparation.
  • High sensitivity: The technique can detect small defects, cracks, and material variations close to the surface.
  • Rapid inspections: Eddy current testing is typically fast, enabling quick assessment of large quantities of parts or components.
  • Versatility: It can be applied to a wide range of conductive materials, including ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic alloys.
  • Real-time results: Eddy current instruments provide immediate feedback, allowing for immediate decision-making during inspections.
  • Cost-effective: The technique helps identify defects early, reducing the risk of failures, minimizing downtime, and saving costs associated with maintenance and repair. Overall, eddy current testing is a valuable tool in many industries, providing efficient and reliable inspection capabilities for ensuring the quality and integrity of critical components and structures.
I am proud of achieving this remarkable certification that will strengthen our NDT capabilities in Pakistan.
