On September 3, 2024, SGS in Qatar successfully hosted a webinar titled "Introduction of PAUT for QA & QC Personnel," showcasing the company's commitment to knowledge-sharing and fostering industry awareness.
The session, which attracted over 70 participants, provided a comprehensive introduction to Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT). Attendees gained insights into the fundamental principles of PAUT, its advantages, limitations, and how it compares to conventional UT and radiography. The 2-hour session offered QA and QC personnel practical knowledge on integrating PAUT into their quality assurance and control processes.
Principle of PAUT
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) operates by using multiple ultrasonic transducers arranged in an array. These transducers can be electronically controlled to focus and steer the ultrasound beam, enabling precise inspection of materials using varying angles. This technique allows for a detailed evaluation of flaws within a material, providing highly accurate and reliable results.
Advantages of PAUT
- High Accuracy: PAUT delivers precise measurements and imaging of internal discontinuity, offering better detection capabilities and POD than conventional UT and radiography.
- Versatility: It can inspect a wide variety of materials, including carbon steel, aluminum, stainless steel, composite and many other for purpose including corrosion, flaw detection, lamination, dis-bonding etc.
- Faster Inspections: PAUT can scan large areas in a shorter amount of time due to the ability to electronically steer the ultrasound beam.
- Improved Documentation: The advanced software used in PAUT allows for the storage and analysis of inspection data, providing detailed records for quality assurance.
- Reduced Radiation Exposure: Unlike radiography, PAUT does not involve radiation, making it a safer alternative for inspectors and surrounding personnel.
Our Approach to PAUT
SGS not only provides PAUT services to clients but also takes responsibility for educating industry professionals on advanced NDT techniques, ensuring the enhancement of QA/QC operations. In response to industry needs, SGS Qatar has designed a specialized 1-day awareness session for QA and QC personnel, along with a comprehensive PAUT Level 2 certification program in Data Interpretation. This enables participants to deepen their technical expertise and improve inspection quality in their operations.
