SGS Expands GLP Testing Capabilities for Product Chemistry and Physical-Chemical Studies on Polymers

Seed and Crop NewsSeed and Crop News07 Sep 2022

We are pleased to announce the successful expansion of good laboratory practices (GLP)-compliant product chemistry and physical-chemical testing capabilities for polymers at our laboratory in Hürth, Germany.

The laboratory's new capabilities allow us to perform safety studies for a variety of commercially relevant polymers, which are commonly used in agrochemicals and seed treatment products as formulation ingredients/additives to increase performance in the field. For example, we can carry out studies on polymers used to encapsulate pesticides for controlled release, to regulate pesticide droplet deposition on hydrophilic and hydrophobic plant surfaces or to increase adhesion to seeds.

Additives and formulation ingredients fall under Regulations 1107/2009 (plant protection products), 1907/2006 (REACH), 528/2012 (BPR), 1272/2008 (CLP) and others. Their safety profiles include chemical and physical characterizations of single substances and mixtures, and these types of studies require GLP-compliant testing methods.

Product chemistry testing provides key data on composition, physical-chemical properties and chemical safety. This is particularly important for ensuring adherence to regulations such as Polymer-REACH. A new regulatory update, expected soon, will outline requirements for conducting studies on the safety of polymers in order to register them under REACH.

Our safety testing capabilities allow us to offer accurate and efficient GLP-compliant product chemistry and physical-chemical studies for all kinds of chemicals and chemical products, including:

  • Method development and validation
  • Content analysis
  • CoA (active substance and formulation/product development)
  • Material accountability (5-batch analysis)
  • CIPAC method testing
  • Storage stability/shelf life
  • Compatibility
  • Density, solubility in water and organic solvents, volatility, melting and freezing points
  • Sieve test, dust content, viscosity, surface tension and flowability

This extension also introduces new, more efficient workflows, almost doubling the laboratory's capacity and allowing for quicker turnaround times. More than 30 experts working in our Hürth laboratory have access to other industry-leading laboratories and the latest analytical methods, including NMR, MS, GPC, DSC, IR, ICP-MS and more.

The Hürth laboratory will continue to invest in state-of-the-art equipment and dedicated teams of experts for product chemistry and physical-chemical services.

Market Leader in GLP-compliant Studies

SGS has been a market leaders in GLP-compliant studies for more than 30 years. Our global network of GLP-compliant/GEP-compliant laboratories and field trial centers assists various sectors (such as the crop protection industry) with a wide range of services. These include field residue, E-fate and metabolism, product chemistry, analytical, microbial and efficacy testing.

Our customers benefit from our strong GLP-compliant and non-GLP-compliant service portfolio for the registration of chemicals (crop protection, pharma, veterinary, the chemical industry and more), covering product chemistry, consumer safety, environmental safety and product efficacy. Additionally, our analytical expertise and extensive experience make us the ideal partner for companies looking to develop and produce innovative chemical products.

Work is delivered on time and within budget, allowing our customers to manage regulatory requirements for entering new and existing products into global markets.

The new capabilities at Hürth complement our existing GLP-compliant study portfolio in chemistry and physical-chemical testing for all uses, especially for polymer R&D.
