Peru has launched a 90-day public consultation on a proposal to ban BPA in varnishes and coatings that are used in food contact materials and articles for infants and young children. Comments are accepted until September 2, 2021.
In July 2021, the World Trade Organization (WTO) announced a draft regulation from Peru’s Ministry of Health on its intention to regulate bisphenol A (BPA) in varnishes and coatings used in food packaging for infants and young children (Proyecto de Norma Sanitaria que regula el bisfenol A en los barnices y revestimientos empleados en envases para alimentos destinados a lactantes y niños pequeños). The draft legislation, under Ministerial Resolution No. 712-2021/MINSA of June 3, 2021 and attached to WTO document 21-5324, prohibits BPA in these products.
Comments on the proposal will be accepted until September 2, 2021.
According to the WTO notification, it is proposed that the draft regulation is to:
- To be adopted 180 days from publication
- To enter into force 6 months from the date of adoption
Highlights of the proposal are summarized in Table 1.
