New Ecological Technical Requirements for Recycled Poly(ethylene terephthalate) Standard in China

China has issued a new national product standard, GB/T 40351-2021. It will become effective on March 1, 2022.

Market demand for recycled polyester has been growing fast in recent years due to global promotion of a circular economy. As the world’s biggest recycled polyester production country, China has recently published a new national standard to guide the industry’s development and promote the quality of recycled polyester fiber.

The Standardization Administration of China has issued a national standard for ecological technical requirements for recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) fiber, GB/T  40351-2021, which was included in China’s No. 11 announcement of approved national standards in 2021. It became effective on March 1, 2022.

Scope

This standard applies to undyed recycled polyester and spun-dyed recycled polyester. Other types of  recycled polyester can refer to this document.

Terminology and definitions

Recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) fiber refers to the fiber made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste materials after recycling.

Eco technical requirements

The limited value of the ecological technical requirements shall meet the requirements of Table 1 in the standard.

The technical requirements include:

  • pH value
  • Odor
  • Free and hydrolyzed formaldehyde content
  • Extractable heavy metal content
  • Volatile organic compounds
  • Residual surfactants
  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)
  • Other chemical residue
  • Total phthalates
  • Total chlorobenzenes and chlorinated toluenes
  • Banned azo colorants
  • Carcinogenic dyestuffs
  • Allergenic dyestuffs
  • Other harmful dyestuffs
