The European Chemicals Agency has launched a 45-day consultation for listing N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide as a substance of very high concern (SVHC). Comments will be accepted until April 19, 2022.

 SG 03422 Chemical

On March 4, 2022, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) launched a 45-day consultation period for listing N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide as a substance of very high concern (SVHC). If approved, the number of SVHCs on the Candidate List will expand from 223 entries to 224 entries.

N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide, a substance structurally similar to acrylamide, is on the Union list of authorized monomers and other starting substances or macromolecules obtained from microbial fermentation, additives and polymer production aids, with a specific migration limit (SML) of 0.01 mg/kg (Not Detected, ND) under Regulation (EU) 10/2011 ‘Food Contact Plastics’ (consolidated version to September 2020).

According to ECHA, comments will be accepted until April 19, 2022.

Highlights of N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide are summarized in Table 1.

SVHCs may be introduced into various consumer products due to the complexities of both the supply chain and production process. Identifying high risk products or materials, or employing a thorough test strategy, can be a smart way to ensure compliance and save costs. In the end, it’s only trusted because it’s tested.
