India has expanded the number of substances in food contact plastics subject to migration limits. The new requirements became effective on August 31, 2022.
In August 2022, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Second Amendment Regulations, 2022 to revise the specific migration limits for food contact plastics in the nation’s Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018 (‘regulation’, version to February 2022).
The latest amendment expands the number of substances from seven to nine by adding antimony and phthalic acid, bis (2-ethylhexyl) ester (DEHP) to regulation 4, sub-regulation (4), Table 1 ‘Requirements for specific migration limits of substances from plastic materials intended to be in contact with articles of food.’
The amendment became effective on August 31, 2022 – the day of its publication in the Official Gazette.
