ISO 8124-2:2023 was published in May 2023, replacing ISO 8124-2:2014. The document is largely based upon EN 71-2:2020.
In May 2023, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published ISO 8124-2:2023. This is the fourth edition of the standard and it replaces ISO 8124-2:2014.
Prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 181, Safety of Toys, the new standard’s updates are aimed at alignment with the current European standard EN 71-1:2020.
Some important updates include:
- New definition added for, amongst others, cleaning, flowing elements, highly flammable solid, toy disguise costume, toys intended to be entered by a child and washing
- 4.2.5 applies to all toys to be worn on the head if not covered by the preceding subclauses of 4.2
- New requirements for toy disguise costumes in cases where they contain loose stuffing that would otherwise fall out during testing
- Added requirements for toy disguise costumes to be tested before and after washing even if instructions state not to wash, and increased testing of smaller specimens by allowing combined specimens or half-sized specimens and narrow material as well as specifying testing for fillings, trims and embellishments
- New annexes using examples to clarify test category applicability for different types of toys to be worn on the head and toy disguise costumes
- New annex with suggestions for manufacturers of toy disguise costumes on how to reduce the rate of spread of flame
