Rhode Island has delayed the effective date for the prohibition of PFAS in food packaging. The new law will now become effective on July 31, 2024.
In June 2022, Rhode Island approved S 2044 Substitute A (Chapter 293, 2022)/H 7438 Substitute A (Chapter 294, 2022) to amend the state’s Toxic Packaging Reduction Act by prohibiting intentionally added per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) substances in food packaging (SafeGuardS 89/22).
In June 2023, the governor of Rhode Island signed S 0724 Substitute A as amended (Chapter 258, 2023)/H 5861 Substitute A as amended (Chapter 257, 2023) to push back the effective date of the aforementioned provision from January 1, 2024, to July 31, 2024.
