SG 141/23
Australia has initiated a consultation over a proposal to restrict/prohibit SCCP. If approved, the ban will become effective on July 1, 2024.
In October 2023, Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) announced its proposed scheduling of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCP) to Schedule 7 of the Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management Standard (IChEMS) register. This will prohibit their import, manufacture, use and export, with limited derogations for unintentional trace contamination (UTC), disposal and articles (products) in use prior to the effective date of the decision.
Highlights of the proposal are summarized in Table 1.
Substance | Scope | Requirement for presence as a UTC | Proposed effective date |
---|---|---|---|
SCCP | Substances
| ≤ 10,000 mg/kg (1%) | July 1, 20241 |
SCCP | Articles | ≤ 1,500 mg/kg (0.15%) | July 1, 20241 |
