China Releases Updated Product Standard GB/T 32614-2023 Outdoor sportswear – Water resistant garments

China has issued an updated version of its national product standard GB/T 32614-2023 Outdoor sportswear – Water resistant garments. The revised standard will become effective on April 1, 2024.

The Standardization Administration of China issued a national product standard, GB/T 32614-2023 Outdoor sportswear – Water resistant garments. It was included in China’s No. 9 announcement on the approved national standards in 2023. This new national standard replaces the previous version, GB/T 32614-2016. The new standard will become effective on April 1, 2024.

Scope

This document is applicable to water resistant garments (including outdoor sportswear) that are mainly made of textile fabrics. It is not applicable to water resistant garments intended for infants younger than 36 months of age.

Main physical and chemical contents

It contains the provisions that relates to fiber content, formaldehyde content, pH value, odor, decomposable carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes, PFOS, PFOA, dimensional changes after home laundering, surface fuzziness and pilling, abrasion resistance, tear force, back rise seam strength, color fastness for shell fabric (washing with soap, color transfer in joints, perspiration, rubbing, water, light), color fastness for lining (washing with soap,  perspiration, rubbing, water), functional requirements for shell fabric (spray rating, hydrostatic pressure rating, water-vapor transmission rate), accessories such as buttons/decorations/zippers and appearance after home laundering. Water resistant garments intended to be worn by children from 3 to 14 years old must also comply with the rules of GB 31701-2015.

Main technical changes

Compared with GB/T 32614-2016, GB/T 32614-2023 contains many updates.

Additions include:

  1. Requirements and test methods for PFOS and PFOA
  2. Requirements and test methods for color difference
  3. Labelling rules for oversized or undersized garments
  4. Internal quality requirements for children's clothing and accessories such as buttons and zippers

Revisions include:

  1. Normative references
  2. Requirements of the footnote for internal quality
  3. Expression for judgment rules
  4. Judgment basis for appearance defects
  5. Requirements for abrasion resistance, colorfastness to light, water-vapor transmission rate and appearance after home laundering
  6. Description of washing methods for spray rating and water-vapor transmission rate
  7. Description of washing methods and testing method for hydrostatic pressure rating
  8. Description of testing method for back rise seam strength
  9. Test methods for fiber content, abrasion resistance, colorfastness to light, colorfastness to transfer in joints, surface fuzziness and pilling, dimensional changes after laundering and skewness of appearance quality

Deletions include:

  1. Requirements and testing method for standard safety size of drawstrings on children's upper wear, safety specifications for cords and drawstrings on children's clothing
  2. Contents of requirements in previous version
