The mandatory national standard for musical instruments, GB 28489-2022, supersedes the previous standard, GB/T 28489-2012, and establishes requirements for the content of harmful substances in musical instruments and introduces updated testing methods.
China has published a mandatory national standard for musical instruments, GB 28489-2022, which will officially come into force on January 1, 2024. This regulation supersedes the previous standard, GB/T 28489-2012, and establishes requirements for the content of harmful substances in musical instruments and introduces updated testing methods.
The new standard is divided into eight comprehensive chapters and encompasses the entire supply chain of the musical instrument industry. It applies not only to instruments but also accessories and packaging. Under the new mandatory standard, musical instruments, their accessories and packaging are classified into two distinct categories:
- Category A: instruments and accessories that come into direct contact with the player's mouth under normal usage
- Category B: instruments, accessories and indoor packaging that, while not in direct contact with the player's mouth, is still accessible under normal usage
See in the table below for harmful substance limit requirements:
Products manufactured or imported prior to January 1, 2024, are granted a transition period of one year. Compliance with this standard is obligatory from January 1, 2025, at the latest.
Products manufactured or imported after January 1, 2024, must comply with this standard before being placed onto the market.
