EU Harmonizes EN 1811:2023 for Nickel Restriction under REACH

The EU has announced its latest list of standards for demonstrating compliance with nickel release under Annex XVII of REACH. The revised list became effective on December 20, 2023.

In February 2023, the European Committee for Standardization (Comité Européen de Normalisation, CEN) issued EN 1811:2023 for the release of nickel from all post assemblies that are inserted into pierced parts of the human body and articles intended to come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin. On December 20, 2023, the European Union (EU) published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) the latest list of standards for presumption of conformity with nickel falling under entry 27 to Annex XVII of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (entry 27 to Annex XVII of REACH).

Highlights of this latest list of standards for nickel under entry 27 to Annex XVII of REACH are summarized in Table 1:
