Leading The Way In Onshore Well Testing For Natural Hydrogen and Helium

August 21, 2024

As the leading provider of onshore well testing services, SGS is at the forefront of an innovative venture in the energy sector. We have successfully conducted exploration well testing operations that are pioneering for both natural hydrogen and helium within a non-petroleum system.

Our unique approach has contributed to the discovery of natural hydrogen at unprecedented purity levels and strong helium content, which constitutes a significant percentage of raw gas, marking a significant milestone in the energy story of the modern world.

Our expert team has commenced delivering the next phase of well testing operations for Gold Hydrogen starting July 2024. This will provide invaluable insights and drive future drilling and well completion designs, setting the groundwork for potential pilot programs and long-term commercialization planning. We aim to extract more samples of both natural hydrogen and helium, for advanced analysis both on and off-site, utilizing the extensive SGS global network of leading laboratories and subject matter expert professionals.

Gold Hydrogen Managing Director Neil McDonald said, “Hydrogen is an amazing opportunity for Australia and for producers and explorers. It’s exciting for Gold Hydrogen to be part of it, to develop the world’s future energy mix and facilitate the decarbonization process.”

Integrating traditional and innovative energy sources

This groundbreaking testing operation also holds significant relevance in the broader context of renewable energy sources. As society continues to strive for a sustainable future, it becomes increasingly important to explore and harness a diverse range of energy sources. Our work with natural hydrogen and helium complements other renewable energy initiatives, such as hydrogen from electrolysis that is generated by renewable energy sources such as, solar, wind as well as carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. These efforts collectively contribute to a more sustainable and efficient energy mix.

As a testing, inspection and certification (TIC) pioneer in renewable energy, through a cohesive and holistic approach, integrating both conventional and innovative energy sources, we can truly advance towards a balanced and sustainable energy future. By conducting these tests, SGS is not only pushing the boundaries of energy exploration but also contributing to a comprehensive energy strategy that considers all aspects of production, consumption and environmental impact.

The role of TIC services

The importance of TIC in the energy transition cannot be overstated. As the energy sector evolves, so does its need for TIC services that contribute to this advancement. At SGS, we lead the change in TIC innovation to meet these developing needs. Our commitment to quality, safety and efficiency ensures that we deliver reliable, accurate results that drive progress in the industry. Through our innovative testing services, we are helping to shape the future of energy, contributing to a world where sustainable energy solutions are not just a goal but a reality.
