Here at SGS, we are dedicated to enhancing society by investing in our people and industries. One of our key talent development initiatives is our industry-specific internship program, which enables us to provide eager students valuable, hands-on experience while advancing their professional development.
This year we welcomed Xzannjah Matsi from James Cook University to our geochemistry internship in Townsville, Queensland. Learn about Xzannjah’s experience as an SGS intern:
Q: Describe your internship at SGS.
A: “My internship was incomparable as a learning experience. I developed an understanding of the process that occurs once geological samples have been delivered for geochemical analysis at a geochemistry facility by starting with sample preparation, moving on to fire assay, the laboratory, instrumentations and through to the final quality checks.”
Q: Did you gain any new skills or experiences?
A: “The experience helped me develop my geochemistry knowledge through experience and observation of the analytical techniques and related quality assurance/quality control procedures involved in the identification and analysis of rock samples. I had the chance to apply prior theoretical academic knowledge to my daily tasks first hand and learned how general geochemistry principles are applied in the workplace.”
Q: What was the best thing about the internship?
A: “The opportunity of being mentored at a well-equipped geochemistry facility allowed me to develop my skills and experience within an enthusiastic and highly motivated environment dedicated to excellence.”
Q: Describe the team you worked with.
A: “The entire team at SGS was incredibly supportive of my learning goals and expectations during my internship. My supervisors were accomplished experts in their fields, and I worked alongside meticulous teams who think systematically and sustainably while collaborating and consistently striving to improve the quality of operations, reduce risks and enhance productivity safely and efficiently.”
Q: Did the internship add value to your academic progression?
A: “To learn from and contribute to such a distinguished company was rewarding and equally invaluable from an academic and personal perspective. I appreciate and respect the team at SGS Townsville for their effort in helping me gain exposure to a work environment that I would have not otherwise encountered as an undergraduate in my field.”
