Safeguarding Your Business in the Age of AI

July 16, 2024

In December 2023, the International Standards Organization launched ISO/IEC 42001, the first global artificial intelligence standard, in response to the rapid escalation of AI technology and its unique challenges.

This standard specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an artificial intelligence management system (AIMS) framework, in which AI systems can be developed and deployed as part of an AI assurance ecosystem. Such an ecosystem considers ethics, transparency, accountability, compliance with regulations and standards, security, monitoring, evaluation and how the AI system’s impact is assessed.

The goal is to help organizations balance innovation with governance, so that they and society benefit the most from AI, while reassuring stakeholders that systems are being developed and used responsibly.

Why is ISO/IEC 42001 important?

From chatbots to virtual assistants to automated vehicles, AI is now part of our everyday lives. It is being adopted rapidly in many industries and being used in many products and services. Undoubtedly its influence on our lives will continue to increase.

Effective governance is a critical factor in the responsible development and use of AI. Regulatory frameworks can help organizations protect consumer data and prevent potential misuse of AI systems.

Key benefits of ISO/IEC 42001 certification

ISO/IEC 42001 enables your organization to:

  • Implement AI safely, with evidence of responsibility and accountability
  • Consider security, safety, fairness, transparency and data and AI system quality
  • Show that introducing AI is a strategic decision with clear objectives
  • Indicate strong governance concerning AI
  • Strike a balance between governance and innovation
  • Ensure that AI is used responsibly, especially concerning its continuous learning
  • Ensure that all relevant safeguards are in place
  • Combine key frameworks with experience to implement crucial processes like risk, life cycle and data quality management
  • Contribute to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Who is ISO/IEC 42001 for?

Any organization or professional looking to implement AI safely. AI systems are complex, and implementing an AIMS requires a truly multidisciplinary approach. Depending on the use case, this may require the involvement of legal, privacy, operations, marketing, R&D, sales, HR, IT and risk managers.
