Presence of PFAS in Food Contact Materials

13 Mar 2024

Food packaging, factory equipment, food utensils – almost everything we eat has been in contact with one or more of these items.  There are thousands of chemicals in food contact materials (FCM) that can potentially migrate into our food or drink.

Some are particularly concerning, including per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are synthetic chemical compounds and are often used in paper takeaway boxes and wooden utensils, due to their grease and water-resistant properties.

Moreover, they pose a threat to human health and to the environment when disposed of.

We had mentioned that the US government had already implemented measures to regulate PFAS chemicals in consumer goods and starting in 2024, a number of bills have been introduced at the state level to restrict/prohibit PFAS in a range of products.

In Hong Kong, with the upcoming ban on single-use plastic products in April (Product Eco-responsibility (Amendment) Bill 2023), more and more paper- and wood-based alternatives are expected to hit the market & used as a substitute.

As the market leader in PFAS services, our Green Mark service can help stakeholders to identify & make correct claims in the right way that ensures their product claims are truthful and substantiated while avoiding greenwashing and its negative effects on consumer trust.
