SGS Expands Transformer Oil Testing Capabilities in Qatar

July 03, 2024

We are delighted to inform that SGS Oil Condition Monitoring (OCM) Facility in Qatar has expanded the transformer oil testing capabilities.

Electrical Transformers which are usually the most critical and expensive equipment in power transmission and distribution systems. It is vital to monitor the health of the transformers.

To ensure the longevity of electrical power transformers it is critical to have precise diagnostics of faults and the assessment of oil quality. Over time, the insulation quality, which is crucial for transformer longevity, can degrade due to factors like temperature, moisture, and oxygen.

SGS Qatar lab can help you to analyze the oil quality and health of your transformer by using OCM predictive maintenance strategy.

SGS Expands Transformer Oil Testing Capabilities in Qatar

Below are listed the crucial tests to be done regularly to monitor transformer oil condition:

  • Dissolved Gas Analysis-DGA (ASTM D3612C): Helps to identify the fault gases generated and different gasses dissolved in the oil indicate various types of thermal and electrical stress occurring within the transformer.
  • Moisture Content (ASTM D1533): Moisture content in oil lowers the insulating dielectric strength.
  • Acid number (ASTM D664/D974): The acidity test measures the content of acids formed by oxidation and contaminants.
  • Dielectric Breakdown (ASTM D1816): Measures the voltage at which the oil fails electrically.
  • Interfacial Tension (ASTM D971): Helps to measure the soluble contaminants and oxidation products in transformer oil.
  • Furan Test (ASTM D5837): Furanic compounds are a breakdown product from overheating of cellulose paper in an anaerobic environment. Indicates the shelf-life of transformers.

Transformer oil sampling should be performed by a trained operator. Sample for DGA should be taken in special syringes which SGS can provide.

By assessing various physical and chemical properties of the oil, technicians can gauge the condition of the transformer. Regular testing not only helps in ensuring operational efficiency but also plays a significant role in preventing potential failures, thereby safeguarding the integrity of the electrical grid.

Since its establishment in 2019, SGS OCM Lab in Qatar has quickly become a crucial partner for businesses across various industries in the region. We are committed to be your trusted partner for best-in-class transformer oil analysis services.
