SGS is joining forces with organizations around the globe this June to shine a light on the importance of food safety.
In April 2019, a joint statement issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), which stated: "Foodborne diseases have a significant impact on public health, food security, productivity and poverty. Nearly 600 million people fall sick and 420,000 die prematurely each year because of foodborne diseases, and 30% of foodborne deaths occur among children under five years of age."
On June 7, the WHO hosts World Food Safety Day 2020 and on June 9, World Accreditation Day takes place with the theme 'Improving Food Safety'. To celebrate, SGS is raising awareness of how its testing and certification services are helping to ensure the quality, safety and sustainability of food from the field to the fork.
With the theme of 'Food safety, everyone's business', this year's World Food Safety Day, organized by the WHO in collaboration with the FAO, promotes global food safety awareness and calls upon countries and decision makers, the private sector, civil society, UN organizations and the general public to take action. Everybody has a role to play, from farm to table, to ensure the food we consume is safe and will not cause damage to health.
World Accreditation Day 2020, organized by International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), highlights how accreditation helps to support the reduction of foodborne diseases by driving up the performance of organizations in the food supply chain, as well as by supporting the confidence of consumers, suppliers, regulators and specifiers in the quality and safety of food.
