Environmental Compliance – Inventory of Hazardous Materials and Ship Recycling

Sampling, analysis and documentation services to help you protect seafarers and the environment and comply with regulations.

To protect your ship’s seafarers and the environment, you must identify hazardous materials.

EU Ship Recycling Regulation No 1257/2013 and the IMO Kong Hong Convention 2009, which enters into force on June 26, 2025, require ships to maintain an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM). This dynamic document covers the life cycle of the ship, from construction to active service to ship breaking. It indicates which hazardous materials – such as PCBs, mercury, leaded paint, asbestos and radioactive substances – are stored and the volumes that are carried onboard.

SGS can help you protect seafarers, prepare your IHM and comply with additional regulations regarding hazardous materials and recycling. We provide sampling and analysis and maintain your documentation for the life cycle of your ship. We also perform ship surveys according to regional, national and international regulations.

Our services include:

  • Inventory of Hazardous Materials
  • Asbestos surveys
  • Environmental, health and safety monitoring of ship recycling facilities
